1) What did you learn about how political machines work?
Political machines can either make or break you but it is the only chance you have in surviving as an immigrant because they give you jobs and places to stay. However, if you do not follow what the head of the political machine wants, then you can be thrown into the streets to starve, just like what happened with Joseph and Shannon after Joseph lost the battle that Mike Kelly definitely needed Joseph to win.
2) What did you learn about the immigrant experience in America?
The immigrant experience in America is brutal and harsh because nobody wanted to hire immigrants and often times, the immigrants went hungry. Immigrants did what they had to do in order to get the money that they needed but sometimes those kinds of jobs were degrading or dangerous.
3) What did you learn about the Oklahoma Land Rush?
The Oklahoma Land Rush was a real thing. It was actually really dangerous because people were shot and trampled over. There were also people who would cheat and sneak out to the land to scout for the piece that they would ultimately claim. People fought desperately for land in the Oklahoma Land Rush but only few were able to get a piece of land since there were limited supplies.
4) Shannon had some preconceptions about America, which were true and which were not as true?
Shannon believed that there was free land in America and once she arrived, she would be handed land immediately. Shannon was correct about the free land in America and how it was just being given away; however, her belief that it was a easy ride to land was completely untrue. She learns that she had to work hard in order to make the money to travel to Oklahoma in order to compete in the land race and make even more in order to buy supplies to better her chances of getting land during the Oklahoma Land Rush.
